Better Homes & Gardens' January issue is out on the stands with a beautiful surprise. We are invited into the home of singer, dancer, actress and (my) favorite Dancing With The Stars judge – Julianne Hough. Her Hollywood Hills home which she shares with her fiancĂ©, NHL player Brooks Laich, is a tranquil oasis, casual and sophisticated all at once.
"My life is instant. I'm always on the go and I travel a lot. So to balance it all, I've created a serene and special place where I feel like my true self." (Julianne Hough for BH&G)
With the help of architect Steve Wunderlich and interior designer Jake Arnold, Hough created an eclectic retreat that is an expression of casual California chic. Her lifelong love for interior design started, as it so often does, with her childhood room which she constantly re-decorated. In fact, her love for novelty is mirrored in most choices she and designer Jake Arnold have made. All accessories, chairs and side tables are flexible and can be easily re-arranged to fit everywhere else around the house.
The style is eclectic, with a palette of muted browns, greens and light blues. There's a lot of texture throughout, from glass an metals to woven blinds and raw wood finishes. The neutral palette is jazzed up with fun accents of color.
"Rather than buying on a trend, [interior designer] Jake [Arnold] and I were both attracted to things that felt timeless. I like it when you can't tell an object's age, when you don't know whether it's brand new or a century old." (Julianne Hough for BH&G)
The kitchen is vibrant with the perfect blue cabinets and brass pendants. Omitting the back of the upper cabinets is an original touch and creates a seamless design. I love the library ladder that provides access to higher shelves.
This lovely breakfast area is perhaps one of my favorite parts of the home. French bistro chairs and fresh flowers soften the industrial look.
The bedroom is serene with a neutral palette. Texture comes from wood, faux fur on the chairs, linen coverlets and window treatments. The black window casements are a unifying detail and frame the home's beautiful garden views. French doors are a natural choice for that indoor-outdoor lifestyle that is so typical to California.
More natural finishes adorn the master bath. Exposed brick, wicker and natural wood mix together really well!
I love this home and if you do too, you'll be pleased to check out this inspiration board I had fun putting together to recreate a similar look (not a sponsored post).
